NEWS AND UPDATES

SPEECH DELIVERED BY SENATOR GBENGA ASHAFA AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE AGRICULTURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM ORGANISED BY SENATOR OLUGBENGA ASHAFA IN CONJUNCTION WITH SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES DEVELOPMENT AGENCY OF NIGERIA’S ON THE 23RD OF FENRUARY 2016 IN LAGOS.

It gives me great pleasure to be here amongst you this morning.

As a Senator Representing Lagos East Senatorial District at the Upper chamber of the National Assembly It remains my core mandate to provide good quality representation for my constituents; to ensure that I give Lagos East a resounding voice on National Issues and to ensure that I attract to our district developmental projects for both the constituents and our entire senatorial district.

It is on the strength of the foregoing that we have conceived this program in partnership with the Small and Medium Scale Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) for the benefit of most of you present here.

Clearly, the economic trajectory of the country in the past 2 years has made certain things clear to all who care to observe. My first observation would be that we can no longer develop our country by placing premium on an employment seeking population as against a self-reliant/ employment providing. Secondly, the days of Nigeria’s dependence on crude oil are over and we must now focus on new vistas of opportunity for our people’s prosperity; to wit: Agriculture.

If we are agreed on our obvious realities, we must then move quickly along the path of progress. This training exercise is seeks THEREFORE to aid you in identifying business opportunities, financing of a small-scale business and show you the necessary tools required in setting up your own SME, especially in the Agricultural Sector.

We Lagosians must be part of this change. We must be at the forefront of contributing to the economic growth and development of the country. We must arm ourselves with the necessary tools to make ourselves self-sufficient, independent and ultimately be a part of the economic development of Nigeria.

I therefore implore us to take this Empowerment training exercise, seriously, ask questions when you need to and ensure that you don’t let your trainers go till you are certain that you have acquired adequate knowledge about SME’s to improve yourself and make your self self-sufficient for the good of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.

In conclusion, each of you that are present here today now has the task of training a minimum of 5 other constituents by sharing in detail all that you will learn here within this period. What we are starting here today is a continuous cycle that will that will produce ASSETS for Lagos East. By assets I mean “Ashafa’s Serial Sensitization Entrepreneurship Trainees.”

I wish you the best and hereby declare this Training exercise open.

Thank you.
